Positioning a Microphone for Double Bass Recording

A double bass can sound enormous in a room, yet disappointingly thin or muddy in a recording. Its lowest notes move a great deal of air, while the bow, strings, bridge and soundboard create important detail higher up the range. Microphone placement determines which of those qualities reaches the recording, often before the choice of microphone becomes significant.

The best position depends on the part being played, the room and the desired role of the bass in the mix. A jazz walking line may need woody finger noise and a clear attack, while an orchestral passage usually benefits from a smooth, balanced blend. Bluegrass, folk and solo performances may call for even more articulation so the instrument remains distinct beside guitars, banjos or vocals.

A reliable first position is 20 to 40 centimetres from the front of the bass, aimed towards the area between the bridge and the end of the fingerboard. This captures a useful blend of fundamental tone and articulation. Start at the height of the bridge, then move the microphone slightly towards the bridge for more attack or towards the fingerboard for a rounder, softer character.

The instrument should usually face into the room rather than directly at a nearby wall. Distance is a tone control. Moving closer increases direct sound and proximity effect on many directional microphones, while moving back allows the bass to blend with the room. Choose a microphone and polar pattern

Large-diaphragm condenser microphones can capture the detail and dynamic range of a double bass, making them a strong choice for solo performances and controlled studios. Cardioid models reject some sound from behind the capsule, which helps when the player is near a wall or other instruments. A high-pass filter can control unnecessary sub-bass, but use it conservatively because the lowest musical notes are part of the instrument’s identity.

A dynamic microphone is often easier to manage in a lively room. Two microphones can provide a detailed close signal and a natural room signal.
